We are reluctant even to use the term breeding but regardless of the terminology you use it is important to define your mission, your goals, and general philosophy of your program. Rather than thinking of this as a breeding program we like to think about improving the Weimaraner breed. More precisely, we are working on improving Weimaraner Hunt lines. We guage our outcome by the results. For testimonials select Featured Weims at the bottom of this page to read what others have to say about our puppies.
Health, Hunting aptitude, and temperament are the focus of our breeding program, however there are many other factors we consider. First of all, we rarely if ever breed without about half the litter of puppies already sold to approved and screened homes. We look for committed families who will invest in the puppies development. We look at their former pet history. We strive to place puppies in homes where they will remain for all of their life. We do not want our puppies ending up in rescue! For this reason, should you ever not be able to keep your OwyheeStar puppy you must return the puppy to us. In this way we can assess, retrain, and place the pup in a new appropriate home. This is more work to find that you might guess and merely placing an ad in the newspaper may appear to be a good approach, however, in the end you cannot guarantee the pup will not end up in rescue.
We like to wait to breed our females until they are grown. We feel early mating while they are still growing is both bad for the mother and the puppies. In most every case we rest females between litters. Sometimes the rest is a year or almost a year and sometimes it is longer. There have been a very few exceptions to this rule over the years. Our goal is to maintain optimum health in our Mothers. That means maintaining health checks and proper care, as wel as seeing they get a good rest between litters.
