The OwyheeStar Mission Statement:
Weimaraners Only!

Our Mission (or reason for existing) is to raise quality Weimaraner puppies that are well socialized and suitable for hunting companions or pets.
OwyheeStar Goals, Thoughts & Prerequisites
The first concern at OwyheeStar is the future of each pup we raise and place. As a responsible breeder we feel it is our duty first to place each pup in a home not only screened suitable but appropriate. We seek homes whereby we believe our puppies will thrive. We make every effort to avoid any of our puppies ending up in rescue, shelters, or God forbid passed around.
Puppy homes must be of the highest caliber and those getting an OwyheeStar Weim must understand the breed. Commitment is key to approval. All inquiries are answered in a timely manner. Everyone must meet the same requirements to be considered for an OwyheeStar pup. The first requirement is to complete the Formal Application process. This application is ONLY available directly from Cliff and Shela Nielsen.
As a responsible breeder we aim to produce sound, healthy Weimaraners that contribute to the preservation and improvement of the breed. There are many aspects to breeding. Quality bred Weimaraners raised right and lovingly placed in the best possible placement helps us achieve our goals. Our breeding mantra is multi-faceted and not easily penned on paper. When breeding over a number of years you require not only experience but a sense about things. These are the things that cannot be passed on or taught.
As a responsible breeder we believe it is our responsibility to educate and support our clients. As you know if you are reading this Mission Statement and our goals, our Website is extensive and full of information. Early 2009, we began an OwyheeStar Blog which is loaded with information that is accessible to the public at large, but geared towards our own clients needs. Our daily blog traffic has been astounding. We didn't have a clue there would be so much interest in what we had to say.
As a responsible breeder we guard our reputation. We have built an extended OwyheeStar family that includes many puppy homes. Most of our clients update us on our their pup's well being. When the occasion arises (which is extremely rare ) we have honored our written guarantee and the terms of sale. Over the years we have had a very few failed placements. We contribute this to our placement protocol. The OwyheeStar Process has grown out of our years of experience. We do things a bit different but in the end we believe the results are better. At least this process works well for us.
There are many aspects to our process, planning, and way we do things. This doesn't begin to outline everything we do, how we do it, or why. Nevertheless, here are things we hold precious and important to the success for each and every puppy that leaves OwyheeStar.
1. We carefully and honestly assess the strengths and weaknesses of the breeding partners to insure a positive contribution to the breed.
2. We study in order to continue to learn new aspects of breeding, the breed, and techinical components to doing a quality job of breeding. We feel it is important to be knowledgeable about the breed and the genetic flaws prevalent in the breed. We make use of available health screening and genetic testing when possible to guard against such flaws. Evaluation takes place in light of test results. Although test results are important we depend heavily on the counsel of our Veterinarian. His years of experience (as a breeder's Vet of choice) as well as his keen eye play an important part in our decisions. We look at the big picture. No one aspect alone is enough on which to base these weighty decisions which are backed up with our guarantee.
3. We take time and effort to educate the public at large about the breed and the requirements of the breed. We take extreme care to make sure each puppy home understands the positive as well as the negative aspects of the breed. We share our knowledge and experience with each prospective Weimaraner client throughout the lifetime of the puppy.
4. We use our abilities (acquired from years of working with dogs, farm animals, as well as troubled teens) to carefully screen potential homes. Our application process requires completion of our Formal Application. We will ask questions about your lifestyle, your family, work schedule and lifestyle as well as your interests and goals for the puppy. This information is invaluable for use in placement of a puppy but also discovering if you are indeed appropriate for an OwyheeStar Weimaraner puppy.
5. While we ask many questions we do welcome your questions and invite you to inspect the puppy environment, however, visitation is by appointment only. We endeavor to answer all questions but on occasion due to time limitations we may refer you to the blog or our Website. We hope you can understand. There is, however, a weath of topics located on our OwyheeStar Blog. New information is posted daily and although the blog is relatively new you can find a large selection of topics available on the lefthand side of the margin.
6. Here at OwyheeStar we offer a health guarantee. Our guarantee is what we consider a True Guarantee. In the event a problem covered by our guarantee arises, we do not require you to return the puppy. We offer a replacement puppy at a later date. Specifics are included in writing and when you acquire an OwyheeStar puppy you will receive a signed and dated guarantee from us. If for any reason you cannot keep your OwyheeStar puppy we ask that you agree to return it to us. No questions asked but we do ask that you return the pup. We are equipped to train and work with problems. We also are skilled and have the resources to find an appropriate second-chance home. We require that OwyheeStar Kennel puppies never be turned to a rescue organization, dog pound, or shelter. If you cannot agree to these terms we are not the breeder for you.
7. We seek to insure a lifetime home for our puppies. Therefore, we discourage hasty decisions. When people contact us and it is clear they do not understand this breed or have unrealistic expectations, we take the time to explain the breed requirements and what to expect when living with a Weimaraner. Unfortunately, some folks do not want to talk about the actual breed. They are enamored with the idea of having a Weimaraner and not counting the true cost financially, emotionally, time wise, and commitment. This is not something you enter without commitment to the whole process and the cost to you personally. Again, if you cannot understand this then we are not your breeder.
